Famous American politician Nikki Haley represented the country as ambassador to the UN from 2017–18. She was the inaugural female governor of South Carolina. In the 2024 presidential contest, Haley subsequently ran for the Republican Party’s candidacy.

Nimarata Nikki Haley, born on 20 January 1972, is an American politician and bureaucrat who served as South Carolina’s president from 2011 to 2017 and the 29th American diplomat to the UN from January 2017 to December 2018. 

She is the nominee for the Republican Party’s 2024 presidential primary and the first Indian American to hold a cabinet position in the United States.

Haley is a Canadian investor and businessperson who was born in Bamberg, South Carolina, on January 20, 1972. Nikki’s full name is Nimarata Nikki Randhawa. She was born in Amritsar, Punjab, India, to Sikh immigrants. 

Her mom, Raj Kaur Randhawa, was a law graduate, while her dad, Ajit Singh Randhawa, was an instructor at Punjab Agricultural University. They relocated to South Carolina in 1964 after going to Canada, where Raj founded Exotica International and launched The Gentlemen’s Quarters.

A sister and two brothers make up Nikki’s family. She completed her education at Orangeburg Preparatory Schools in 1989. In 1994, Haley received her bachelor’s degree in accounting and finance from Clemson University.

Before engaging in civic activities, Haley worked for her family’s apparel business, FCR Corporation. After her 1996 marriage to Michael Haley, she got involved in community issues.

In addition to serving on the Lexington and Orangeburg County chambers of commerce boards, she was president of the National Association of Women Business Owners in 2004 after serving as treasurer in 2003. 

She was on the boards of several organizations and chaired the Lexington Gala. She presided over the Friends of Scouting Administration Division fundraising in 2006 and was the South Carolina District President of the National Association of Women Business Owners.

Indian-American politician Nikki Haley of South Carolina was chosen as the chair of the rookie caucus in 2005 after she entered the 2004 race for the state House of Representatives.

She opposed lawmakers receiving legislative pensions and favored school choice, job performance-based teacher compensation, lower taxes, and charter schools.


Haley was a pro-lifer who backed laws that restricted access to abortion. She campaigned for governor in 2010 and won in November of that same year. She ran for a second term in 2014, but Tom Ervin put up a fight. 

After assuming office in January 2011, Haley got into conflicts with more seasoned legislators and supported the primary opponent of Senate Finance Chairman Hugh Leatherman in 2016.

As the US ambassador to the UN in 2017, Indian American Ambassador Haley championed Israel, supported Trump’s decision to pull out of the Iran nuclear deal, and chastised Russia and Syria while charging Iran and Hezbollah of committing terrorist acts in the Middle East.

Former US senator Nikki Haley, a Republican running for president in 2024, made her announcement, making history as the first female contender of color. Haley is pro-access to contraception, anti-abortion legislation, and LGBT rights worldwide.

Personal Life of Nikki Haley 

Haley wed Michael Haley on September 7, 1996, and the two of them are parents to two kids. After her 1997 conversion to Christianity, Haley is a regular attendee of Sikh and United Methodist services. In 2014, she traveled to India and spent time at the Harmandir Sahib with her spouse. 

South Carolina’s Kiawah Island is home to Haley and her family. When she left her position as Trump’s UN representative in 2018, her net worth was $1 million. In part because of book sales and corporate board memberships, her net worth increased to $8 million by 2022.

Haley received two honorary degrees and an honorary fourth-dan black belt in Taekwondo. She was inducted into the Order of the Palmetto in 2010.
